Have you guys heard of Cedar Park Center? It's a new venue that just opened September 25th with a sold-out George Strait show.

Besides being a venue for live entertainment for big names like Kelly Clarkson and Wilco, it is also home to the Texas Stars, a minor league affiliate of the National Hockey League's Dallas Stars. It's actually the third-largest mixed-use indoor venue in Central Texas! For more information see this article from The Statesman. It looks like a pretty cool venue to check out so if you ever go to an event there, let us know how it is!

So I keep getting crap that I'm not going to ACL this year, but I figure this is my first year not to go since I moved here six years ago. Truth is, if I was to go it would not be for the headliner. Although, it was exciting news when I found out that Justice Records artists nelo and ...Trail of Dead would be playing. Both bands are worth checking out.

If you want start your ACL weekend out right then check out nelo on Friday at 11:15 am on the BMI stage. This will be a great show to chill out on your blanket, while you soak up some sun.

Then on Saturday at 5:00 pm on the Xbox 360 Stage get ready to get your minds blown with ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead. This will be the best show going on between 5-6pm hands down!

Fellow co-worker Ajay tells his 2009 ACL picks to blog Republic of Austin! This guy knows his music. He has interviewed so many artists for his Austin music blog 'Nites and for Austin Vida it's unreal. His goal for this year was to attend at least 200 shows, and I think he surpassed it a while ago. Okay enough butt-kissin for Ajay, just go check out what bands he wants to see at ACL...trust me he knows what he's talking about!

New Tales To Tell gets another great review. It's in the recent issue of Innocent Words Magazine! If you haven't heard the album you need to go out and get it! It won't disappoint.

New Tales To Tell: A Tribute To Love And Rockets
By: John B. Moore

"On first blush, it would appear that the architect of the new Love and Rockets tribute album was just pulling random names out of hat. How else do you explain one-hit wonders Better Than Ezra, alongside more indie-minded artists like The Dandy Warhols, Frances Black and up-and-comers War Tapes?"

Most people don't like Mondays, but I look forward to them because on Monday nights I can always rely on great food and great atmosphere. If you don't want to get caught up on the Monday night football hoopla *cough Go Cowboys* here are some cool places to kick the week off.

TC's Lounge is best on Monday nights! Located on East 12th and Webberville Road, this hole in the wall is known for bringing in some great blues music. It's BYOB, and they always serve free food like Gumbo, Chili, or Manwhich. If you haven't been there on a Monday you gotta go!

Rio Rita's is also another Monday night hidden gem. Located on East 6th street, Monday nights are Rita's Love and a 45 Record Player Party. Bring your 45's and you can spin 3 tunes. The music starts at 8pm.

If you are ever having a "Case of the
Mondays," you can always go dance it off at Nasty’s during their infamously funky, 12-years-running Monday Night Dance Party. DJ Mel spins from 10pm to 2am along with Prince Klassen. The longest running HIP HOP/DANCE PARTY/MONSTER JAM weekly in Texas!

On Friday night at 1am (technically Saturday morning), there will be an epic dance party on the Lamar pedestrian bridge, with music by B The Beat. According to the flier: Hip hop, booty bass, crunk, funk, dancehall, reggaeton, and more!

Confirm your attendance on Facebook: www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=140941912854

Aside from the unnecessary quotes on the flier ("ready"), this party looks pretty legit. What else you gonna do after the bars close on Friday?

So when it comes to free events, I don't think twice about going. This is for all you other Freebians out there in the ATX! After the final Friday and Saturday night ACL acts close, up to 4,000 people will be granted access to the Seaholm Afterfest, which will be the first of many sorts. Headlining acts such as Broken Social Scene will take the stage at Seaholm, moving the music revelry from Zilker Park to the smokestacks and lights of downtown. DID I MENTION IT'S FREE? This event is presented by Voodoo Cowboy, WOXY.com, and Rare Magazine!

South By Southwest premiered a pretty cool new promo video today, featuring a slew of musicians, filmmakers, and celebrities. Also, it opens up with the song "Truck" by a cool local band called The Octopus Project.

I know it's still six months away, but I can't wait for SXSW. I saw Trail of Dead three times at this past SXSW. The festival is a great opportunity to overload your brain with multiple shows from your favorite bands.

Bowery Presents has done it yet again…

The crowd poured into New York’s Webster Hall, eagerly awaiting the melodic shrill brought to you by Trail of Dead and Secret Machines. It’s their first time in New York since February, last time celebrating the drop of their new album, The Century of Self. This has been a pinnacle release as it marks Trail of Dead’s first since ending their relationship with longtime record label, Interscope Records back in late 2007.

The signature Space Rock sound of Dallas’s Secret Machines split the air accompanied by a spectral light show. The melodious effect infused interludes were reminiscent of Pink Floyd with more pace. The wail of vocalist Brandon Curtis’s voice, the growl of a deep, effect driven bass added to the melodic sound and gave an overall passive aggressive experience to their music. Closing the set, band members entered a phase of ringing and tweaking effects while carelessly tossing their instruments about, an almost too perfect segue for Trail of Dead.

All too quickly, Justice Records - Trail of Dead ripped into their set. The sound level was a required absurdity as the rhythm seemed to link to your pulse. Energetic is an inadequate description. Suddenly, the Hall felt overcapacity as the crowd threw down in the pit in near unison. Drummer, vocalist, guitarist Jason Reece drifted around stage, enticing the crowd while picking up a new instrument and seamlessly transitioning into the next verse. Like a madman, Reece hurled himself into the crowd and bounced about. While the riot in the crowd ensues as people try to make their way towards the stage, Reece continues to sing unfazed. Guitar/vocalist Conrad Keely transitions the vocals with his calm and collected attitude into the next number. Just when you think he may almost be too damned cool, he jumps into a rage and erratically picks his guitar while stomping his foot. While closing the set, Reece began hurling bottles of water into the masses—making certain all crowd members would leave drenched and disheveled.

Trail of Dead continues their North American tour with Secret Machines. Check for tour dates in your area here http://www.trailofdead.com/ and more from Bowery Presents here http://www.bowerypresents.com/ . You won’t be sorry.

Various Artists: New Tales to Tell: A Tribute to Love & Rockets

Posted by David Medsker (09/16/2009 @ 11:00 am)

Say this for New Tales to Tell: A Tribute to Love & Rockets: at 18 tracks, it is one of the most thorough tribute albums we’ve seen come down the pipe in a while, possibly ever. While this makes for a longer listen than is probably necessary, it stands as a testament to Love & Rockets that so many bands – and so many different kinds of bands, at that – were eager to contribute. Black Francis does his Black Francis thing on “All in My Mind” – it should come as no surprise that the band’s 1986 breakthrough Express is the most covered album, with every song but two appearing here – and the Flaming Lips flip “Kundalini Express” inside out, downplaying the drum track and guitar while running the vocals though what sounds like an old ELO-era voice processor. Better Than Ezra, of all bands, does a straight but effective version of “So Alive,” and Chantal Claret teams up with No Doubt drummer Adrian Young to turn “Lazy” into a frisky striptease. Funny, then, that a tribute album featuring 18 songs would not include some of the band’s best-known tunes; “Haunted When the Minutes Drag,” “Yin and Yang the Flower Pot Men,” “Sweet Lover Hangover” and “Redbird” were all skipped over in favor of deep cuts, and while that’s a diehard fan’s wet dream, it’s a bit of a head-scratcher from a label standpoint. Still, it’s hard to argue with the results, which hit a lot more often than they miss. (Justice Records 2009)

New Tales to Tell: A Tribute to Love and Rockets

In 1985, a band hit the scene that was quite unlike any other we had ever heard. As a high school sophomore, I fell in love with Love and Rockets, not to mention the guys in the band. I remember running out to buy the Express cassette the first time I heard “Ball of Confusion,” and not long after that, waiting anxiously for Earth, Sun, Moon to be released. I still have both cassettes tucked away in a box under my bed; the CDs sit prominently in my CD rack.
